This is more a continuation of a facebook commentary, but anyway, this picture is from 2003 - like 6 months after I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  I have never EVER cut my hair in my life.....this is just what it looked like after falling out.  Oh yeah, this is on halloween, so don't mind the green eyelashes!

  • Punta Cana Trip - Day Seven (his & hers)

I was a little too specific on something in my writing - so there will be some edits today (like not including people's full first & last names)

    Day 7 - Wednesday

I worked 7:30 to noon today.  It was nice to get off and know I had the rest of the day to myself.  I was ready to get in the ocean again and relax.  I'd hardly had time to do some of the things I'd really wanted like work on my journaling, read my book, work on the music for Rachel's wedding, or take a class at the gym.  We loaded up our journals and books and headed to the beach.  There was also a class at 6 that I told Clint I wasnted to try out.

We picked out our chairs on the beach and got out our books and began to relax and read.  I wasn't too far into my reading when I told Clint I had to get in it.  So we put our books down and went and got in the water.  The waves were not nearly as strong today and I wasn't as afraid to get out a little bit farther.  Of course I was still only about waist high.  I was proud of myself.  I also wore my sunglasses this day which kept a lot of water out of my eyes.  Clint would laugh because I would take a big gasping breath if I thought a big wave was coming in.  But a girl has got to be ready in case of going under.  But there was no going under this day - all pleasant experiences.  We stayed in the water for awhile.  I think we read some more after we got out of the water.  It was such a nice time.

Then we got cleaned up and headed to the main building so I could make it to the class.  We were walking around the gym area when I heard Clint say, "Hey that's Andy."  I'm trying to figure out why he would know an associate when I turn and see Andy and Lezlee [from Church of Christ in Texas].  I am so incredibly baffled.  Turns out Lezlee's grandmother, Millie, won the trip and gave it to them.  We stand around and talk for awhile.  I'm shocked that they are staying through Sunday, since they have nowhere to worship.  I know they realize how long we've been there, so I manage a way to throw into conversation our trip to Santo Domingo.  I wasn't trying to seem "holier than thou" but I wanted there to be no doubt that we had worshipped.  We gave them our room number and offered to meet up sometime.  We were very nervous about over-stepping.  they probably wanted some alone time.  Well, it was time for my class to start so I excused myself and Clint stayed back to talk.

It was hard for me to get started in the class.  The good part was that there was just 2 other people in the class - a woman and her young daughter.  The instructor never really showed us "how" to do anything, she just moved in front of us and we had to figure it out.  I got a few moves down, but some things I just couldn't keep up with.  I was actually glad when class was over.

By the time I got out, Clint was working out, but he didn't seem too sad that time was up.  He filled me in on parting with [our friends] and I was glad to know they had our room number, but we didn't have thiers.  That way it was solely their choice whether we were in contact or not.

We went back to the room and ordered room service.  Our stomachs had been a little weak, so we liked ordering something "normal" like chicken fingers and fries.  Plus, there are only so many times you want to make the trek between our room and the main building in one day.  I had fulfilled my quota.  My legs would get sore by night time, but I was glad for all the walking.  It was really good for me.

I also have to interject how entertaining the TV programming has been here.  There were not a lot of channels to choose from really.  Several were in Spanish and the majority of the rest were sports.  However, there was always some B movie from the 90's playing and I found them super entertaining.  At home Clint normally turns the TV off at some point during the night, but he had informed me he wasn't turning it off here - although it was never still on when we got up.  We finally saw the sleep timer turn on by itself.  That was really weird.  Some of my coworkers would tell stories of their TVs changing channels on their own.  So funny.  But we watched TV and went to bed.

    June 10, 2009

Julia got up early and went to work at 7:30.  I slept in and rested until around 12:00 when she got off work.  I really had good intentions about going to work out at the gym while she was working.  I haven't much though.  I've been battling off a sinus infection.  I think its the same stuff Julia had a few weeks ago.  Lucky for me she still has some medicine that I can take.  Also, my stomach hasn't been doing great, but it's getting better.  It's kept me from feeling like working out much.

We ate lunch at one of the delis here then got ready for the ocean.  We spent the afternoon just relaxing on the beach.  We swam in the ocean for a bit.  We passed time reading, journaling, and listening to ipods while lounging on the beach.  We got cleaned up and headed back up to the main buildings.  There was a class at 6 that Julia wanted to try out.  It was in the gym so I decided to finally get in another workout while she was doing that.  When we were headed to the class, I saw a familiar person from back home.  At first I had to think if I was just seeing things.  Finally I decided I was right.  It was Andy & Lezlee from [TX congregation]!  It was so weird to run into them in the Dominican Republic!  Apparently Lezlee's grandmother sells Pre-Paid Legal and had won this trip.  She couldn't go so she gave it to them.  We agreed that we would have to meet up later and hang out.  I was nervous about intruding on their vacation, but they were up for it.  We parted ways and we went to the gym.  I worked out while Julia went to her class.  I watched her a little bit.  She was really getting it down, she could move really well.  We didn't feel like going all the way back to the room, getting dressed for dinner, and walking all the way back so we ordered room service.  Besides there was some more normal food on the room service menu.  We ordered the great chicken fingers and I also got some spaghetti.  It wasn't really good.  We watched tv and went to sleep.

  • Punta Cana Trip - Day Six (his & hers)

    Day 6 - Tuesday

My eyes opened in that "I'm completely wide awake" fashion before 8am.  What in the world?  Oh well.  It was good sleep in a cozy bed.

Not much is open for breakfast, so we ate at Cafetto again.  Clint ordered apple pancakes with strawberry sauce or something like that - the only kind of pancakes on the menu.  He got plain pancakes with plain syrup and that really amused me for some reason.  He convinced me to order fruit and I got good melon and strawberry, but then there was this orange shaped fruit that had the top cut off.  Inside was a mucus like sludge surrounding its seeds.  Disgusting.  I'm not eating that.  I told Clint he had to try it since he's the one who convinced me to order it.  He took a small bite and said it was bitter like grapefruit.  Blech!  We both ordered huevos rancheros.  I know what huevos rancheros are supposed to be like and this was not it.  I was very disappointed.  I got a corn tortilla with 2 fried eggs on top with some reddish orange sauce poured on top and a side of black beans.  The tortilla and beans were good.

We made another stop at the gift shop today.  We had thought we might go to a market in Santo Domingo.  Once we saw how dangerous it was, we didn't even ask.  Clint's coworker had given him money for an anklet and I got us some coffee and other souvenirs.  We went back to the room before I had to be at work at 1:30.  I got off work at 6pm.  I felt sorry for Clint trying to figure out what to do while I'm at work.

We are wanting to be sure and try each restaurant while we are here, so tonight we are eating at Los Gallos - a Mexican restaurant.  My stomach's been a little weird ever since we've been back so I'm wanting to take it easy.  They set out chips and guacamole, pico de gallo, and plain cheese.  I ate lots of chips and cheese.  It felt normal and tasted good.  I ordered black bean soup and fried chicken tacos - it was good.  Clint ordered cochinita pibil since it sounded like what Johnny Depp orders all the time on Once Upon a Time in Mexico - it was fabulous!  He also ordered some kind of steak thing.  All in all we felt this restaurant was a success.  Clint got a little piece of platano on his plate and I asked if I could just have a small plate of those.  The waiter seemed to find this funny, but he was happy to oblige.  I think my favorite thing about all-inclusive is being able to order a bunch of random stuff.

There was a show called Circus that night that we thought we might check out.  There was a band playing and we listened for awhile.  Clint and I started reminiscing on our dance classes and Clint said we should practice sometime.  We went out on a veranda where no one else was and we started trying to remember how to waltz.  It was sweet.  I love him so much.  It was ten to fifteen minutes past time for the circus show to start and I wasn't interested enough to keep waiting so we went back to the room.

I'm not sure what time we woke up.  We went to eat at Cafetto and had huevos rancheros.  The pancakes said they were apple with strawberry sauce.  Sounded good to me, but when they got there, they were plain old pancakes.  Bummer, oh well, I didn't pay for them.

We went to the gift shop again and got some souvenirs for ourselves, family and friends.  We killed tim in the room until Julia went to work at 1:30.  I relaxed on the balcony for awhile then went to swim in the ocean.  The waves were much calmer today.  I swam out for a ways and just treaded water for a while.  I was surprised at how treading water didn't tire me out.  The ocean is a beautiful aquamarine with many blue patches.  Even while swimming you can see all the way to the bottom like you are looking through glass.  You can see the ripples on the sand on the bottom.  I swam around for a long time then came back to shore for a rest.  I sat there under a thatched canopy cover and someone brought me a bottle of water.  After resting I decided it was time for round two.  I found a seashell I'm going to try to make into some jewelry for Jules.  Again I swam and treaded water for awhile then came back in when I ran out of energy.  Going back to the room my muscles kept getting tired.  I got cleaned up and went to meet Jules when she got off work at 6:00.  I felt really fatigued and Jules helped me realize that i had forgot about lunch while I was playing! No wonder.

When Jules got off work, we went to eat at Los Gallos, the mexican restaurant here at the resort.  The food here is much different than what you would get in the United States.  It has a Carribbean style to it I guess.  I got puerco pibil tostadas and a steak that was way undercooked.  Jules had bean soup and some kind of taquitos.  The food was pretty good, just not as good as the mexican food at La Fiesta.

After we ate there was a band playing in one of the lounges.  We listened for awhile, took a few pictures, and just roamed around.  We went outside to a huge patio that overlooked the resort and practiced our dance moves.

  • Punta Cana Trip - Day Five (his perspective)

    June 8, 2009

We woke up at 5:30 to get ready to go to the bus station.  Roberto was already up and had made us some coffee.  We headed out and walked a few blocks, then caught another taxi.  This one was a little nicer.  We took the taxi to the bus station at Parque en Riquillo, near where we were dropped off.  The station was around the corner and a half block away from where we waited for Roberto the previous day.  It would have been a safer place to wait and I felt silly for not going ahead and finding it that day.  But I realized it's not safe to walk the streets aimlessly by ourselves.  We said our goodbyes to Roberto and boarded a bus that would take us to Higuey.  From there we would have to catch another bus to Punta Cana.  I was nervous about being on the right bus, but the worker repeatedly called out our city of destination trying to get people on to fill the bus.  What he was calling has stuck in my head - "Higuey, Higuey, Higuey! La Romana, Higuey!"

It was not an express route so we picked up and dropped off people all along the way.  This was a big bus like the one we had taken the day before.  We watched the movie "The Mask" in Spanish.  After that the worker put in another DVD.  This one was a series of ridiculous music videos.  I thought, "Dominican attempts to be cool rappers and singers are so lame."  I later realized that these videos were parodies meant to be comedic.  I still wasn't amused with being subjected to the local's versions of comedy.  I hope I never see "Miguel y Alejandro" ever again.  There was an old lady sitting across from us who got a kick out of it though, so it was funny to watch her.  I didn't sleep for the entire trip back.  I felt surprisingly refreshed and awake today.  The trip became more enjoyable and less stressful.

We arrived in Higuey and was dropped off on the side of the street.  Even though Roberto kept telling us to trust no one, we had to ask where the station was.  Again we were dropped off only around the corner and a half block away from the station.  We were dropped off in front of a Yamaha motorcycle dealership.  It stood out against the city.  Every dealership I saw along our way seemed to do so.  I saw Toyota, Nissan, Diahatsu, Ford, Kia and Chevrolet dealerships.  I guess I could get a job down here if we wanted to move here.

We go to the station and began asking for a bus to take us to Punta Cana.  It depended on which part and since we were going to the Moon Palace resort, we had to be on the specific bus that would go by there.  After asking numerous people we found one, but there were no seats left.  We sat outside the station and waited nervously for another one.  Some guy tried to sell me a cellphone.  Yeah right.  It wasn't long until another bus came, and we got the first seats.  These were much smaller buses.  As we were boarding a small boy came up to us and begged for food.  My heart stirred within me.  Children are my weak spot.  However, helping him would single me out as a tourist with money.  So by helping him I would be hurting myself.  I had to tell him no and ignore his repeated pleas.  He eventually gave up and left.  As we were waiting for the bus to leave, a man got on carrying a live chicken.  Me and Jules laughed to ourselves.  She's told me stories of the exact same thing when she lived in Honduras.  It was neat to get to experience as much of the culture of this country.  A girl dressed in a work uniform of the Moon Palace Resort also got on and all of my fears of being on the wrong bus left.

We left the station and drove through the country.  I enjoyed seeing the sugar cane fields where men were working the harvest.  The misty mountains in the distance were also a neat sight to see.  We began to pass excursion trips that the tourists from the resorts had taken.  There was a convoy of Jeeps.  We also passed open air buses full of white people.  Seeing them was so different for me after being submersed in the Dominican population.  Julia told me that they were on an excursion to see the "local people and their customs"  Also they paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars to take that trip.  I had to pat myself on the back.  Grand total we had spent about $70 and experienced way more authentic culture than those people ever would.

Our bus finally arrived at the Moon Palace stop.  The resort worker on our bus got off so I began to follow her.  The surroundings didn't look familiar but I was used to having to walk for a ways from the stop to get to your destination.  The bus worker stopped me though and told me that this was the workers entrance in the back and told me that as a client we wanted the main entrance in the front which was the next stop.  I was a little embarrassed for them thinking that I was "too good" for the servant's entrance.  Anyway, we got dropped off at the main gate and showed our bracelets to the guard shack.  As we were walking through, the guard flagged down a van that was entering and told them to pick us up.  It was almost a mile from the gate to the resort buildings.  When we got on the van we saw a familiar face, we saw a familiar face, it was Tone!  It was such a neat coincidence to see him again.  He was glad to see we had made the trip alright, we had talked to him about our plans that earlier night.  We got the compound and walked into the lobby feeling much like accomplished world travelers.  We had made it!!  I know the credit belongs to God for keeping us safe through our journey.  We walked to the Pre-Paid desk and all of Julia's coworkers were there.  None of them had to worry a second longer.  We headed to the room to get cleaned up and relax.  We lounged around the room and then got Julia ready for work.  She went to work at 6:30.  It was banquet night so she dressed nice.  At 7:30 I got ready and went to meet her.  We both went and ate at the associate's banquet with Julie and Jeff.  Some of the more prominent associates gave encouraging speeches.  After we ate we went back to the desk and Julia helped people prepare for catching their flight home the next day.  There was an old lady that wasn't with our group that came by and asked what this Pre-Paid Legal stuff was all about.  I thought, "Wow, what a great opportunity."  However, after we explained, she said, "So its for people who don't already have their own attorneys.  Sounds like a fancy name for a bail bondsman."  She would hear no other explanation and totally turned her nose up at us and walked off.

Her behavior just amazed me and I had to find the amusement in the way snobbish people act.  Since I've been here I've witnessed several instances much like this one.  Its sad to see the people treat the workers like dirt sometimes.  Sometimes they don't mean to, but they are being the definition of stupid white people.  One lady at a restaurant ordered 3 drinks one by one and sent them all back because she "simply cannot even drink this." Some people ask stupid questions.  When ordering his meal, one man said, "I'll have just whatever you like eating here," to the waiter.  I thought, well as a worker, he might not get the chance to eat this food much.  One time a bar tender broke a keg of beer open or something because a geyser of beer hit the 20 foot ceiling of the restaurant.  People began cheering and clapping.  It was mocking the guy and it embarrassed him.  Even though I'm a privileged guest, I try to remain understanding and not lose remembrance of decent humanity.

After the desk closed we went back to the room.  We were both tired.  We decided to watch "Take the Lead" on her laptop.  I fell asleep immediately.

  • Punta Cana Trip - Day Five (her perspective)

    Day 5 - Monday

It was not the most restful sleep we'd had - lying on top of a comforter - nothing underneath it but a mattress.  I had folded over the edge to give myself a little cover and I fought it most of the night.  The alarm sounded at 5:15 and I just had to lie there for a moment more.  My legs ached.

I finally got up and headed to the bathroom to brush my teeth.  Roberto was asleep on the couch and that made me nervous.  I'd hate to have to wake him, but we need him to guide us.  The bathroom door made a scraping sound.  When I came out of the bathroom he was up and I was glad.

The day before they had explained how their custom is to make their guests coffee.  Clint loves the coffee here so no real problem for him.  I had said I drink very little coffee and with lots of sugar.  Just as he had done the day before at the church house, Roberto was in the kitchen making coffee for us.  We needed to go and my stomach was not ready for coffee, but there I was being handed a mug, just as I had said, with very little coffee and lots of sugar.  Clint got a full mug black.  We sipped.  It was time to go.  Roberto left the room and I snuck over to the sink and poured mine out.  Clint followed shortly.

"Ready to go?" I asked.  We grabbed our things and started walking.  I wasn't sure if we were walking to the bus station or where.  Seemed like that would be an even longer walk.  We stopped on one road and waited for a taxi.  The taxi drove us past where the bus had dropped us one the corner.  We turned and could see the bus station was just around the corner.  I almost felt silly but we had been warned not to listen to people telling us where to go because they would get us lost.  Staying put and letting the search party come to you is always the 1st rule of survival.  Maybe we would have been fine, but I felt like we would have drawn more attention to ourselves if we had started wandering around lost.

So anyway, Roberto stayed with us to make sure we got the right bus and made sure we were comfortable before he left us. I tried to use the bathroom at the station, but on top of not having toilet seats there was no toilet paper either.  Not even a place to hold it.  I skipped that - though my stomach felt upset and I wasn't sure if I would make it.  Our bus was not an express so there would be stops and it was only going as far as Higuey.  Once in Higuey we would need to catch another bus to Punta Cana.  This bus was just as big and nice as the first bus.  They showed a video of a local variety/comedy show.  It was so awful it was funny.  The bus wasn't full so they drove around town with a guy hanging out yelling, "Higuey, Higuey, Higuey!"  We were able to pick up several additional passengers this way.  What made me nervous was that we didn't know what bus stop to get off at.  There was a stop at a big bus station so I walked to the front of the bus to ask the driver if this was where I could catch the bus to Punta Cana.  Men crowded the bus door and a couple, upon seeing me, said "right this way, sweetheart. come with me." (spanish)  I got nervous.

The bus driver said it was the next stop and I was relieved to go take my seat once again.  We got off at the next stop and no mob was waiting at the door so that was nice.  We saw buses marked 'Sitrabapu' and went straight to them, but they pointed us to a bus that would go directly to Moon Palace.  This bus was much smaller and there were no seats leaft.  I asked if there would be another and they said in 15 minutes.  We'll wait.  As soon as that bus left the station, another pulled in.  It might not leave for 15 minutes but it showed up right away.  there was a sign taped to the window listing their stops and one said 'Mon Palace' so we felt confident with our choice.  Once the seats filled up people kept piling in to stand.  We laughed that the people on the last bus probably thought we were weenies for not standing.  A man got on the bus with a chicken tied to his hand.  I was so excited!  We were true adventurers doing things the hard core way!  A lady in uniform got on our bus with a Moon Palace name tag, so we knew we could follow her and everything would be just fine.

Back tracking to the previous bus ride, my stomach kept cramping like something bad was gonna happen.  Then, it would calm down again.  I ripped out a sheet of notebook paper and started crumbling it up and really working it in my hands.  clint was so confused and asked what I was doing.  I told him if I didn't feel any better I was using the bathroom in Higuey no matter what.  He seemed impressed with my paper crumbling technique.  Well, my stomach felt fine in Higuey and I was glad for it.  I didn' thave to use my paper after all.

Our bus made lots of stops and picked up lots of people even thougth there was standing room only.  Finally they called out Moon Palace and several people got up including us.  It looked like we had an uphill hike ahead of us - that's ok.  The man at the door stopped Clint and asked if we were going as clients in which he informed him we were.  Oh no, this is not your stop.  We sat back down and shortly we were pulled up to the front gate.  It was embarassing to be treated as better.  We could ride the same bus, but we couldn't go in the same door.

I have to admit that the gate that left me no impression in the beginning was a very welcome sight.  We started walking past the guard shack when a tour bus rolled in and they gave us a ride to the door.  Inside was our friend Tony - the man who sat in the back with us the first night.  He was happy to see us and the feeling was very mutual.

We walked into the lobby and I pulled my cellphone out to let Julie know we had made it, but no sooner had I done so that I saw her standing up ahead.  She was standing there talking with some people, but when she saw us she exclaimed with great joy "You made it!" and grabbed her chest in relief.  We were all smiles and never intended to mention any of the times we felt in danger.  I noticed the lady she was talking to had casts on both arms.  I quickly directed my attention to her.  Apparently she had fallen during one of the rains and broken both wrists.  I felt so horrible for her.

We headed back to our room. Mmmm. Bed.

I think this is the day we ate lunch at Cafetto.  I ordered a hamburger and Clint had a chicken panini.  He didn't like his but I thought mine was just fine.  We were worn out and headed back to the room to rest until it was time for me to work that night.  This was the night of the farewell banquet for the first trip.  I had brought a dress to wear and it was nice to get showered and dressed up after feeling so grungy.  I was scheduled to work 6:30-9pm.  Julie allowed us to go into the dinner when it started at 7:30 and eat and listen in.  We had just gotten the list of shuttle departure times for the next day so after the banquet I ended up having to work longer than normal to tell everyone their time.  I know that was a bummer for Clint - but it's part of why we got to go.  10 o'clock came and I was ready to get out of there.  We'd already eaten so we just went straight to the room.  I had to watch TV to unwind like always - Clint fell asleep pretty quick, but I was awake for awhile.  My laptop died and forced me to quit watching the movie and go to sleep.

I was excited to sleep in because I didn't have to be at work until 1:30 the next afternoon.
